Cotton vs Polyester for Backpacking (NOT What You'd Expect...)

Is there really a difference between polyester and cotton when it comes to hiking shirts? While on paper a polyester sun hoodie clearly wins, in this video we’re going to test how big of a difference it really makes on trail. We’ll take both shirts through a 15 mile day in Coyote Gulch. Will the cotton keep up? - Or will it chafe me to oblivion?

In this video:
The Breathability Gap: We compare how "muggy" a cotton shirt feels versus technical fabrics when the temperature starts to rise.
The Sag Factor: Watch what happens to the fit and shape of cotton once it gets fully saturated.
Dry-Time Showdown: We dunk both shirts in the water and track exactly how many minutes it takes for each to return to "bone dry" status.
Sun Protection Realities: We analyze the pros and cons of specialized features, like hoods, in high-exposure canyon environments.
Long-Term Comfort: Assessing how different fabrics hold up under backpack straps over a full day of hiking.

Do you stick to performance-based gear, or are you a fan of keeping it simple with what you already own? Let us know your thoughts in the comments!
